We are in the middle of a quiet revolution that affects all of our lives, at home and at work. There is a recognition that getting it right will matter: to our quality of life, our economy and our society in the future.

Lord Carter, Minister for Communications, Technology and Broadcasting, at the Department for Business Enterprise and Regulatory Reform, has just released the “Digital Britain” interim report, arguing that digital technology, convergence and, in particular, broadband, has, over just a few years, gone from being the province of the young or the geek to being a daily reality for most people, businesses and everyone involved in the communications industries.

The interim report lays out the key issues for change and seeks to establish an evidence-based consensus on what needs to be accomplished to fully reap the benefits of this revolution.

During this meeting, hosted by MEP Malcolm Harbour, we discussed with Minister Carter on the importance of the "Broadband Internet". His address focused on the importance of broadband, and particularly developments in mobile technologies, as a vehicle for economic growth.

He also noted the important decisions being made nationally, as well as in the European Union (the Framework Review; the proposed Recommendation on Next Generation Access and the review of Universal Services) and internationally, (in terms of critical decisions on Internet Governance).
