SUMMARY:EU Consumer Law: Present and Future
DESCRIPTION:As the European Commission reflects on the future of consumer protection in the digital economy, the proposed Digital Fairness Act has sparked an important debate: does the current EU framework adequately address emerging online commercial practices, or are additional measures needed and if so in what fields? This event will examine whether existing instruments — including the Unfair Commercial Practices Directive and other horizontal consumer rules — remain fit for purpose in an increasingly complex digital environment. Participants will explore potential gaps in enforcement, new market dynamics and practices, and the risk of regulatory overlap. Bringing together policymakers, industry representatives and consumer stakeholders, the discussion will focus on how to strengthen consumer trust and ensure fairness online, in particular for minors, while safeguarding innovation, proportionality, and the competitiveness of Europe’s digital economy.
