SUMMARY:Fake science – the threat of scientific misinformation to integrity, competitiveness and democracy
DESCRIPTION:The integrity of information online has become a critical concern, with information and science being manipulated and instrumentalised, and the evidence base often dismissed in favour of political and ideological purposes. Similarly to what we have experienced with fake news rampaging through social media and undermining the public’s trust in institutions, the infiltration of scientific misinformation/disinformation and fake science in the scientific and public discourse are a threat to a healthy public debate democracy. Technology is part of the problem in that it facilitates the production and dissemination of fake science but could also be part of the solution. Society and policy-makers need to be able to trust scientific information to make evidence-based decisions, and researchers to drive innovation and discoveries that are so central to the EU's competitiveness and to the benefit of society. If science cannot be protected against intentional or non-intentional manipulation and interference, both innovation and democracy are at risk. Reliable, excellent science is a stepping stone towards innovation and discoveries. If that gets undermined, the potential of the EU as a research and innovation powerhouse will be affected. It is also in the public interest that public/private funds are not invested into investigating or building upon fabricated/fake research. This event will bring together key stakeholders to raise awareness of these issues and discuss avenues for collaboration to face the growing challenges and risk of polarisation.
