DESCRIPTION:Connected and automated driving are prominent features on the policy agenda today even if it may be some time before they become a reality in the EU. They bring with them important issues ranging from regulation and infrastructure to societal issues regarding the security and safety of citizens and the extent of human reliance on connectivity overall.This EIF lunch debate will tackle questions such as: How will user expectations for example of less congestion, more safety, shorter travel times and improved mobility services and energy efficiency weigh up against the reality of connected cars and automated driving? What more can policymakers do to overcome technological, regulatory & policy obstacles that stand in the way of implementing the connected car? Can collaboration within the broader telecoms industry (telcos, satellite operators, other network operators) be improved to deliver the infrastructure required to provide value-added automotive services alongside basic passenger connectivity? What are the challenges for car manufacturers as they engage with the telecoms industry to obtain ubiquitous, reliable and secure connectivity that they can embed into their vehicles to provide enhanced services to users that users will be willing to pay for? What other challenges do car manufacturers face?
