18 February: EIF Dinner Debate on The Digital World in 2030: Europe's Place in the Technology Race

As many voice concerns that Europe is falling behind in the area of ICT, and maybe losing the leadership in mobile communications that it has enjoyed for decades, speakers at this EIF debate will elaborate on where Europe stands in the ongoing technology race.

19 February: EIF Breakfast on Debate Next Generation Network Infrastructures

During this EIF breakfast debate two founding members of the 5G Public Private Partnership association and the European commission will share their views on the scope of this PPP from various angles: the future of communications, key challenges to overcome as well as the background and expectations of the 5G PPP.

23 February: EIF High-level Roundtable on EIF report ‘The Digital World in 2030: What Place for Europe?’

On the 23rd February, EIF is going to host a High-level Roundtable in the context of the upcoming Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The MWC will be a very timely occasion to present the EIF report ‘The Digital World in 2030: What Place for Europe?’ (to be released in March 2014) and to bring policy-makers, regulators and industry experts together to discuss their views and provide the authors with their insights. 

4 March: EIF Dinner Debate on The Telecom Single Market

This debate will be hosted by EIF Chair Pilar del Castillo MEP. The Organising Committee for this debate is currently working on the agenda. EIF members can join the OC here.

18 March: Launch of EIF Report ‘The Digital World in 2030: What Place for Europe?’

The new EIF report ‘The Digital World in 2030: What Place for Europe?’ will be released on 18 March and a launch event will be held in the European Parliament to mark the occasion with MEPs, EIF members and friends.

To whom does the future belong?

On 21 January EIF offered a special opportunity to listen to the presentation of three parallel foresight projects run by the European Commission, ESPAS and EIF.

Internet Governance in the post-Snowden era

On 22 January EIF hosted a breakfast debate to offer an occasion for taking stock of the IGF process and continuing the conversation EIF started with MEPs, the Commission, business and civil society experts for the long-term sustainability of the internet as a network of networks, with a focus on the role of the EU.

EIF new partnership with Dutch parliamentary forum iPoort

EIF and iPoort have agreed to work together in a ‘go-local’ partnership to improve political understanding of information society issues at the national and European level. This partnership allows EIF to tap into Dutch national issues and iPoort to present the European perspectives on information technologies.

Hong Kong Government to initiate an ‘Innovation and Technology Bureau’

In an attempt to consolidate its regional leadership in IT, the Hong Kong government has pledged to establish an Innovation and Technology Bureau (ITB). The consultation and legislation work on the objectives and composition of the new bureau will be intense in the coming months.

In exploring this, a working definition of a Smart City is established and the cities fitting this definition across the Member States are mapped.

Smartphone explosion in 2014

Phone users in India and China will together buy more than 500m smartphones in 2014, comprising half of the total that will be sold in 47 key countries, according to a new forecast. They will also add more than 400m new users of internet-enabled phones to the global network, vaulting India ahead of the US to make it the second-largest country for smartphone use in the world.
