Nicolas Demassieux is the head of Orange Labs Research. He leads Orange research strategy, coordinates major research initiatives involving 700+ engineers and PhD students in 18 countries, and impulses Orange’s active policy of research partnership with SMEs/start-ups, but also the academic and corporate ecosystem.

Nicolas Demassieux started his career teaching at Telecom ParisTech, where he headed the Electrical Engineering department from 1991 to 1997. In particular, his work on digital image processing (MPEG) and wireless communication (OFDM turbocodes) was integrated into several successful product lines with the industry. 

He joined Motorola in 1997 to create and head a new research centre in Paris, before moving to the management of Morotola European research, and later on, of Motorola global broadband Wireless research. Activities included technologies for Wi-Fi, 3G/4G mobile broadband, mobile Internet, mobile television and digital home. In 2007, he became one of the 9 Motorola fellows. He also served as CEO of Motorola France.

In 2009-2010, Nicolas Demassieux founded an Internet start-up around big data technologies before joining Orange in 2010.

Nicolas Demassieux published more than 40 papers and book contributions, and holds several patents. He is passionate about innovation and R&D efficiency. In addition to his professional activities, he takes interest in a wide range of scientific developments: complexity, biology, evolution and paleontology, natural and artificial ecosystems, digital urbanism.
