This lunch debate will discuss the proposal for the new European Electronic Communications Code (EECC) - cross-cutting a number of key objectives to promote very high capacity data connectivity of European citizens and businesses, competition in the provision of electronic communications networks and services, the development of the internal market, and the interests of European citizens.

The Code proposes measures in five areas: a) increased competition and predictability for investments; b) a better use of radio-frequencies; c) a safer online environment for users and fairer rules for all players; d) the future of universal service obligations and e) better governance structures at European level.

The measures aim to stimulate competition, which drives investments and strengthens the internal market and consumer rights. The European Commission estimates that reaching the EU’s connectivity objectives will require €500 billion investment over the coming decade.

It is the fifth time that the European Parliament will review the rules for the electronic communications sector since the EU liberalised the market in 1998.This event offers a first opportunity for EIF members to discuss all aspects of the new Code and to hear the views from some of the key stakeholders.
