Cooperation and coordination between different sectors are crucial to progress. The European Internet Forum and the European Energy Forum have the pleasure of inviting you to share ideas with ICT and Energy experts in a joint event.

In the EU, transport still depends on oil for about 94% of its energy needs. Since 1990, CO2 emissions from transport have increased by 25% while emissions from electricity have decreased during the same period by the same percentage. Could we capture the benefit of a decarbonizing power sector by coupling it with transport?

As the EU recognizes, the transition towards low-emission and shared mobility is key to reaching the ambitious target of cutting greenhouse gas emissions to 40% by 2030.

E-mobility is one promising solution to make road transport more sustainable. However, even though a variety of electric vehicles (EVs) are available on the market today, only 1.2% of all cars sold are currently EVs. One factor that would hamper the EVs market uptake is the lack of a comprehensive and dense charging infrastructure. How can we create the appropriate environment for its deployment?

Industry stakeholders can play a contributory role in this quest for decarbonising road transport by identifying current obstacles and pointing policymakers towards more efficient solutions to support the deployment of shared electric mobility adequately served by a dense charging network covering cities and beyond. Technology development is moving fast but far more needs to be done to decrease air pollution and increase efficiency in the transport sector. Synergies and coordination between different layers and sectors and the right market conditions are the keys that will unlock this huge potential.
