In collaboration with the Startup Europe initiative by the European Commission, a new Startup Europe network called ‘Startup Europe Mediterranean’ (SEMED) has been recently established. Building on the experience and the successes of Startup Europe SEMED aims to make a significant step forward as it links together different EU priorities: startups, investment but also the strategy for the Mediterranean as a geo-strategic area with innovation at the centre of the neighbourhood policy, development and cooperation and migration. Under the patronage of Mariya Gabriel, European Commissioner responsible for Digital Economy and Society, the official launch event will be hosted in Matera. Due to its geographical position and thanks to its strong Mediterranean cultural identity, to be celebrated in 2019 as a symbol of the European culture, Matera is the natural location to start hosting some of the activities bridging the European Union with the whole Mediterranean region.
