A healthy and competitive digital sector depends on all actors in the value chain: from telecommunication operators of all sizes, digital service providers, to consumers and the creative sector. A key part in this ecosystem is undoubtedly telecommunication networks and their infrastructures, given the important connectivity services they provide. For Europe to realize its full potential in the digital economy, the European Union has set ambitious digital targets for 2030, on connectivity, digital transformation of businesses and public services..
In February 2024, the European Commission published a White Paper on How to master Europe’s digital infrastructure needs, to kickstart a reflection on the challenges Europe currently faces in the rollout of future connectivity networks, and requested stakeholders to provide feedback on possible scenarios going forward. The consultation on the White Paper totalled 357 responses, showcasing wide interest in these issues from all sides of the internet value chain.
Considering the evolution of competitive options available to consumers, the development of new business models, and the importance of infrastructure deployment, and grounded on the basis of the responses to the consultation, the European Commission now has the chance to decide what are the best steps forward for the European digital and telecoms sector.
