ABOUT

  • Member of the European Parliament since 2004; serves since then in the powerful Committee on internal market and consumer protection (IMCO), which has legislative oversight on all regulatory laws within the heart of the European Union, the “Single Market” - both in digital and traditional terms.
  • Substitute Member of the committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs (ECON).
  • Member of the presidency of the parliamentary group of the European People’s Party (EPP); elected as spokesperson on internal market and consumer protection of his parliamentary group for four times since 2007.
  • Steering important legislation through Parliament, i.e. the “consumer rights directive” (CRD) in 2011; rapporteur on “network and information security” directive introducing for the first time cybersecurity rules in the EU (2016); rapporteur on the only two co-decision texts in competition law, the directive on “actions for damages claims” (2013) and now the directive for the “European competition authorities network” (ECN+); currently working on legislation introducing proportionality rules in the services area of the EU; initiated parliamentary resolution on “consumer rights in the digital single market” in Nov 2014.
