ACM Statement/Principles for Responsible Algorithmic Systems

Policy position

Algorithmic systems are increasingly being used by governments and companies to make or recommend decisions that have far-reaching effects on individuals, organizations, and society. While they hold the promise of making society more equitable, inclusive, and efficient, that is not assured. It is thus imperative that algorithmic systems comply fully with established legal, ethical, and scientific norms and that the risks of their use be proportional to the specific problems being addressed.
